As Stage 3 of re-opening in the province continues, many Employers and workers are left with unanswered questions - how safe is it for me to return to work? How do I keep my workforce safe when we do re-open? How can I ensure clients are following protocols in place? Whatever question comes to mind, one thing is for certain - as the province moves to re-open, the old way to conduct business is out, and a “new normal” is here. It is crucial that Employers review their internal procedures before re-opening their businesses.
A few important questions to ask as an Employer:
- Is there a policy/procedure in place for Safe Return/Re-Entry to Work?
- What protective measures (i.e. Personal Protective Equipment, barriers, etc.) are currently in place to protect workers/clients?
- Are they adequate?
- How is the success or failure of your control measured?
- What information is available to ensure compliance once the business re-opens?
All of this is overwhelming, no one was ready for this. This pandemic has shifted the way people communicate and interact with one another, conduct meetings or social gatherings, or even how they report to work. It is imperative that Employer’s embrace and adapt to the “new normal” by reviewing their internal policies and procedures, compare them to the suggested guidelines put forth by the government, Public Health and the World Health Organization, and ensure compliance when selecting controls to protect the workforce/clients. The Ministry of Labour is preparing for the re-opening of businesses by hiring 58 new Inspectors, specific to enforcing compliance surrounding COVID-19 re-integration.
